Hooks & Captions That Stop the Scroll

You spent twenty minutes on a post. Good photo, solid info, a real deal at the end. It got eleven views and two of them were your cousin. What went wrong? Almost always the same thing: the first line.

On a phone, people don't read your post — they scan the opener while their thumb is already moving. If that first line doesn't grab, nothing after it matters. The hook does about 90% of the work, and most owners spend 90% of their effort on the part nobody reaches.

Why "Call Us Today" Dies On Arrival

Openers like "Check us out!" or "Call us for all your needs" don't stop anyone, because they don't say anything. There's no reason to slow down. The scroll is a fight for half a second of attention, and vague enthusiasm loses that fight every time.

What wins is specific. A real number. A bold claim. Or a quiet worry your customer already has, said out loud before they can look away.

Take Dave, an Edmonton plumber. His usual opener was "Call us for all your plumbing needs" — forgettable. Instead of guessing at something catchier, he asked AI for ten hooks about drain maintenance and read them like a customer would. The winner: "The $6,000 backup started with a smell you ignored." That line stops a homeowner cold, because it names a fear and puts a price on it. Everything Dave wanted to say about drain cleaning still followed — but now people actually got to it.

Ask For Ten, Pick The One You'd Stop For

Here's the part that changes everything: don't ask AI for the hook. Ask for ten. The first idea is rarely the best one, and the tenth is often the surprise that lands. Generating options is exactly what AI is fast at — you bring the judgment.

Then read them the way a distracted person would, thumb moving. Which one makes YOU pause? Not the one that sounds the most professional — the one you'd actually stop for. That's your answer. A specific number, a mistake your customer secretly worries about, or a claim bold enough to feel risky beats any polite "we're open!" line.

Keep It Honest

One caution: a great hook can drift into a promise you can't keep. If AI hands you "Fix any leak in 10 minutes — guaranteed," and that isn't true, don't post it. The stopping power isn't worth a customer who feels tricked. Keep the punch, cut the exaggeration. The best hooks are true things said sharply, not tall tales.

Get the opener right and the same post that got eleven views can get a thousand — same photo, same offer, one better line.
